In Dentistry, a Nightguard, also known as an occlusal (biting surface) guard, is a removable acrylic (plastic) appliance that fits over the upper and lower teeth used to minimize the effects of bruxism which is the grinding of the teeth or joint problems (TMJ) when the person is sleeping. Some Nightguards can be bought at a pharmacy while others are fabricated in a dental lab by a certified dental technician. People who wake up with sore facial muscles, facial weakness, or a jaw that is 'locked' are good candidates for this device.
